Choosing your cruise cabin might seem simple… until you open the deck plan and suddenly feel like you’re reading blueprints for a spaceship.
Inside cabin, balcony, aft, mid-ship, forward, guarantee, deck levels… there are way more options than most people expect, and picking the wrong one can make a big difference in your cruise experience.
The good news? Once you understand a few simple tips, choosing the right cabin becomes easy. This guide will help you figure out exactly which cabin location, type, and deck is best for your trip so you can book with confidence.

Seas the day

Your cabin isn’t just a place to sleep. The location and type of room you choose can affect:
- How much motion you feel
- How noisy your room is
- How convenient your location is
- How much space you have
- How much you spend
The right cabin can make your cruise feel relaxing and comfortable.
The wrong cabin can leave you wishing you picked something different.
Interior Cabin
Best for: Budget travelers, short cruises, people who don’t stay in the room much
- No window
- Most affordable option
- Dark = great for sleeping
- Smaller space
Good choice if you want to save money for excursions or drinks.

Oceanview Cabin
Best for: People who want natural light without paying balcony prices
- Window but no balcony
- Slightly bigger than interior
- Good mid-range option
Great for first-time cruisers.
Balcony Cabin
Best for: Most travelers, longer cruises, couples
- Private balcony
- More space
- Fresh air & ocean views
- Worth it for 5+ day cruises
My personal favorite for Caribbean cruises.

Suite
Best for: Luxury travel, special trips, families needing space
- Largest rooms
- Priority boarding perks
- Better locations
- Extra amenities
Not required, but amazing if it fits your budget.
Mid-Ship (Best for most people)
- Least motion
- Easy access to everything
- Good for first-time cruisers
✔ Recommended for almost everyone
Forward (Front of ship)
- More motion
- Often quieter
- Great views
✔ Good for experienced cruisers
Aft (Back of ship)
- Amazing wake views
- Often larger balconies
- Can feel vibration
✔ Great if you love balcony views
(My favorite when available)

Middle decks are usually the safest choice.
Avoid cabins:
- Under the pool
- Under the buffet
- Under nightclubs
- Near elevators if you want quiet
Good rule:
Pick a cabin with cabins above and below you.
First cruise → Mid-ship balcony
Budget → Interior mid-ship
Family → Balcony or connecting rooms
Couples → Balcony or aft
Motion sickness → Mid-ship lower deck
Luxury → Suite or aft balcony
GUARANTEE CABINS VS PICKING YOUR OWN
Guarantee cabin:
- Cheaper
- Cruise line picks location
- Could be great or random
Pick your own:
- Costs more
- You control location
- Less risk
I usually recommend picking your cabin if the price difference isn’t huge.
