The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are a tropical paradise made up of a string of coral islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of Florida, connected by the scenic Overseas Highway (U.S. 1). They’re known for their laid-back vibe, world-class fishing, snorkeling and diving, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the U.S.
The Florida Keys aren’t just a tropical getaway—they’re steeped in rich history and fascinating stories. Originally inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta tribes, the Keys were first charted by Spanish explorers in the early 1500s. Over the centuries, they became a haven for pirates, salvagers, and adventurers seeking opportunity along the treacherous coral reefs.
By the 1800s, Key West had become one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the U.S., thanks to the shipwreck salvage industry. In 1912, Henry Flagler completed the ambitious Overseas Railroad, linking the Keys to mainland Florida—a project later devastated by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane.
The highway that replaced the rail line, known as the Overseas Highway, now offers one of the most scenic drives in the country. Key West also gained fame as a creative retreat for writers like Ernest Hemingway and continues to embrace its independent spirit, even playfully declaring itself the “Conch Republic” in 1982.
From indigenous roots to quirky revolutions, the Keys are far more than just a beach destination—they’re a slice of living history.
