Perfect weekend getaway

WHER TO EAT, STAY & EXPLORE

Dunedin Florida

Your guide to a weekend filled with local markets, craft breweries, beautiful beaches, and some of the best sunsets on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

freedom

If you haven’t spent a weekend in Dunedin, Florida, you’re seriously missing out on one of the cutest little coastal towns on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Located just north of Clearwater, Dunedin has everything I love about living in Florida. Beautiful beaches, locally owned restaurants, quirky little shops, craft breweries, outdoor adventures, and some absolutely incredible sunsets.

And unlike some of the bigger beach destinations, Dunedin still has that laid-back, small-town Florida charm.

It’s the kind of place where you can spend your morning shopping at a local market, your afternoon lounging by a pool, and your evening watching the sunset with a drink in your hand.

Whether you’re planning a romantic couples getaway, a girls’ weekend, or just need a little staycation, here’s how I’d spend the perfect weekend in Dunedin, Florida.

Friday

Check Into the Historic Fenway Hotel

Fenway Hotel, Autograph Collection

If you’re going to spend a weekend in Dunedin, my recommendation is to stay at the historic Fenway Hotel.

Located along Edgewater Drive overlooking St. Joseph Sound, this beautiful boutique hotel is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and has been a Dunedin landmark since 1927.

The hotel has so much character, combining its historic charm with modern amenities, beautiful rooms, an outdoor pool, and some pretty incredible waterfront views.

And one of the best things about staying here? You’re close enough to downtown Dunedin to walk to the restaurants, shops, and breweries without worrying about finding parking every time you want to go somewhere.

After checking in, take some time to explore the hotel, settle into your room, and enjoy the waterfront.

If you’re hungry, the hotel’s HEW Parlor & Chophouse is a great option for dinner, serving steaks, seafood, and other dishes in a beautiful setting.

Or head downtown for a casual dinner and a little exploring.

Don’t stay out too late, though. Saturday is all about experiencing downtown Dunedin.

Saturday

Shop the Dunedin Downtown Market

One of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday morning is wandering through a local market, and Dunedin has a great one.

The Dunedin Downtown Market is the perfect place to grab a coffee, browse handmade goods, and support local small businesses.

You’ll find a rotating selection of vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry and artwork to candles, plants, baked goods, fresh produce, and other unique finds.

There’s often live music, which makes it even more enjoyable to wander around without being in a hurry.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably leave with a bag full of things you didn’t know you needed.

Market hours and locations vary by season:

  • January–June: Fridays and Saturdays, 9 AM–2 PM, at Pioneer Park.
  • July–October: Saturdays, 9 AM–1 PM, at the Dunedin History Museum parking lot.
  • November–December: Fridays and Saturdays, 9 AM–2 PM, at Pioneer Park.

Once you’ve finished shopping at the market, spend some time exploring downtown Dunedin.

One of the things I love most about this town is how walkable everything is. Main Street is filled with locally owned shops, boutiques, restaurants, and places to stop for a drink.

You really don’t need much of a plan. Just wander around and see what catches your attention.

When you’re ready for lunch, pick one of the many restaurants around downtown, grab a patio table, and enjoy some people-watching.

Or, if you’re a craft beer lover, stop by Dunedin Brewery, one of Florida’s longest-running craft breweries.

With house-brewed beers, pub food, and frequent live music, it’s a fun place to kick off the afternoon.

Dunedin is known for its craft beer scene, so don’t worry if you don’t make it to every brewery during the day. We’ll save the brewery hopping for Sunday night.

Saturday Afternoon

After a busy morning exploring downtown, it’s time to slow things down.

Head back to the Fenway Hotel, change into your swimsuit, and spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool.

Honestly, isn’t this what weekend getaways are supposed to be about?

Grab a good book, find a lounge chair, soak up some Florida sunshine, and enjoy having absolutely nowhere you need to be.

I always recommend building some downtime into a weekend trip. You don’t need to fill every minute with activities to have a great time.

Sometimes the best part of a vacation is doing absolutely nothing.

And after a few hours of pool time, it’s time to get ready for one of the best sunset spots in Dunedin.

Saturday Evening

Sunset at Hi-Fi Rooftop Bar

Hi-Fi Rooftop Bar

If there’s one thing you absolutely need to do during your weekend in Dunedin, it’s catch a sunset from the Hi-Fi Rooftop Bar at the Fenway Hotel.

Located on the rooftop of the hotel, Hi-Fi offers gorgeous views over St. Joseph Sound toward Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands.

And when the sun starts setting over the water? It’s pretty hard to beat.

Order a cocktail, a glass of wine, or a local craft beer, and enjoy the view while sharing a few appetizers.

The rooftop offers small plates and shareable bites, making it a great place for a relaxed evening. If you’re looking for a larger sit-down dinner, HEW Parlor & Chophouse downstairs is another option.

Fenway Hotel, Autograph Collection

My tip: Get there early! The rooftop is popular around sunset, and seating is first-come, first-served. Reservations aren’t accepted.

There is just something about watching the sun disappear over the Gulf Coast that never gets old.

And the best part? If you’re staying at the Fenway, your room is only a short walk away.

Sunday Morning

Beach Day

Sunday is all about enjoying the beautiful beaches and outdoor adventures that make Dunedin such a special place.

After breakfast, pack your beach bag and head toward Honeymoon Island State Park.

Located just a short drive from downtown Dunedin, Honeymoon Island is one of my favorite places to spend a beach day.

You’ll find beautiful stretches of white sand, clear Gulf water, nature trails, and plenty of opportunities to hunt for seashells.

And if you’re anything like me, you might spend more time looking for shells than actually sitting on the beach.

Bring your beach chairs, sunscreen, a cooler, and plan to stay awhile.

Bringing your pup?

Honeymoon Island has a designated dog beach, which is a great option if you’re traveling with your four-legged best friend.

Dogs must remain on a handheld leash no longer than six feet and are only permitted in designated pet areas. The dog beach is located toward the southern end of the island.

One thing to remember: The Fenway Hotel doesn’t generally allow pets other than service animals, so if you’re planning a dog-friendly weekend, you’ll want to choose different accommodations.

Or Take the Ferry to Caladesi Island

If you’re looking for something a little more secluded, take the ferry from Honeymoon Island over to Caladesi Island State Park.

Caladesi is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve escaped to your own little tropical island.

There are no beachfront hotels or busy streets, just beautiful beaches, natural scenery, and plenty of space to relax.

You can spend the afternoon swimming, shelling, walking along the shoreline, or exploring the island’s nature trails.

The ferry departs from Honeymoon Island, with schedules depending on the season, weather, and attendance.

Cafe Honeymoon Rentals & Concessions

My tip: If you love shelling, bring a mesh bag and take your time walking the shoreline. You never know what little treasures you’ll find.

I’d recommend choosing either Honeymoon Island or Caladesi for your main beach day rather than trying to rush through both.

After all, you’re on vacation!

Sunday Afternoon

Dunedin Causway

Before heading back downtown, make a stop along the Dunedin Causeway.

This beautiful stretch of road connects the mainland to Honeymoon Island and is surrounded by the sparkling waters of St. Joseph Sound.

It’s one of those places where you can easily spend an entire afternoon.

Whether you want to get out on the water or just relax and enjoy the views, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the calm waters around the causeway. You can also go fishing, take a walk, or simply sit along the shoreline watching the boats go by.

Rental availability varies, but Sail Honeymoon operates a concession offering kayak and sailboat rentals.

Grab a Snack at High & Dry Grill

While you’re on the causeway, stop at High & Dry Grill.

This casual waterfront concession is perfect for grabbing a quick bite or something refreshing between activities.

There’s nothing fancy about it, and that’s exactly what makes it fit the laid-back atmosphere of the causeway.

Just sunshine, saltwater, and good Florida vibes.

One important note for dog owners: Dogs aren’t permitted on the causeway beaches, although leashed dogs are allowed on the Pinellas Trail that runs alongside the causeway.

Sunday Evening

Catch One More Sunset at Honeymoon Island

Before leaving the beach behind, I’d make one more stop at Honeymoon Island for sunset.

There are so many beautiful places to watch the sunset along Florida’s Gulf Coast, but Honeymoon Island is definitely one of my favorites.

Find a quiet spot along the shoreline, kick off your shoes, and watch the sky turn shades of orange, pink, and purple.

You might even catch dolphins swimming offshore.

Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones you remember most.

Just make sure you leave the park by its posted closing time, which is generally sunset.

Sunday Night

Brewery Hopping in Downtown Dunedin

After a full day of sunshine and saltwater, head back to the hotel to freshen up before spending your last night exploring downtown Dunedin’s brewery scene.

Dunedin has become a favorite destination for craft beer lovers, and one of the best things about downtown is that several breweries are close enough to explore on foot.

Here are a few places worth checking out:

  • Dunedin Brewery: A local favorite with craft beers, pub food, and live music.
  • 7venth Sun Brewery: Known for creative, small-batch beers and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Woodwright Brewing Company: A unique brewery with a rustic setting and a great outdoor space.
  • Cueni Brewing Co.: A smaller, welcoming brewery with a rotating selection of craft beers.

If you’re not a beer drinker, don’t worry. Downtown has plenty of restaurants, cocktail spots, and other places to enjoy an evening out.

Grab dinner somewhere along Main Street, listen to some live music, and enjoy your last night in town.

My tip: Check each brewery’s Sunday hours before planning your route. Some close earlier on Sundays, so you may want to start your brewery hopping in the late afternoon.

Monday Morning

One Last Coffee Before Heading Home

If you’re making this a long weekend, take advantage of one final morning in Dunedin.

Sleep in, grab breakfast at the Fenway, or head downtown for a coffee and a little last-minute shopping.

If you have extra time, take a walk along the waterfront or explore a section of the Pinellas Trail.

Then it’s time to pack up and head home.

Although if you’re anything like me, you’ll already be planning your next visit.

Final Thoughts: Why Dunedin Is the Perfect Florida Weekend Getaway

What I love most about Dunedin is that it really does have a little bit of everything.

You can spend your mornings shopping from local artists, your afternoons lounging by a pool or exploring beautiful beaches, and your evenings watching incredible sunsets before heading downtown for dinner and live music.

And somehow, even with all there is to do, Dunedin never seems to lose that laid-back, small-town Florida charm.

It’s one of those places where you don’t need an elaborate itinerary or a packed schedule to have a great weekend. Sometimes all you need is a beach bag, a comfortable pair of sandals, and a few days away from your everyday routine.

Whether you’re visiting from out of state or you’re a Florida local looking for a fun staycation, Dunedin deserves a spot on your travel list.

So book that room at the Fenway, grab your favorite person, and spend a weekend discovering one of Florida’s most charming coastal towns.

And don’t forget to catch at least one sunset. Trust me on that one.
