A Perfect 3-Day Itinerary for Food, Art, Breweries & Small-Town Florida Charm
If you’re looking for a Florida weekend getaway that feels completely different from the beaches just a few miles away, Safety Harbor deserves a spot on your list. Sitting along the shores of Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, this little town is filled with moss-covered oak trees, brick streets, locally owned restaurants, breweries, colorful art, parks and one of the cutest downtown areas around.
My biggest tip? Plan your visit for the third weekend of the month. Safety Harbor’s Third Friday celebration takes over Main Street on the third Friday of each month from 6–10 p.m., with live music, vendors, food, drinks, shopping and downtown businesses staying open late. It’s one of the best times to experience the town

Friday: Check In + Third Friday
Start your weekend by checking into Safety Harbor Resort and Spa. Sitting right on Tampa Bay and steps from Main Street, this historic resort is basically made for a Safety Harbor weekend. There’s a huge spa and fitness center, pools, restaurants and beautiful waterfront views and you can leave the car parked while you explore much of downtown.
Get settled, change and then head straight to Third Friday. Main Street closes to traffic and fills with vendors, food, live music, arts and crafts, drinks and people wandering between the local restaurants and shops. It’s free to attend and runs from 6–10 p.m.
Don’t make too many dinner plans for Friday. Part of the fun is walking around, grabbing something that looks good, shopping from local vendors, stopping for a drink and seeing where the night takes you.
Bringing Your Dog?
Make a stop at Neighborhood BarK and Boutique. It’s a dog-focused hangout with an off-leash yard, drinks, coffee and a boutique filled with goodies for your pup. If you’re planning to use the off-leash area, check their requirements beforehand because dogs need to be registered and vaccination records are required.
Saturday Morning: Coffee + Breakfast
Saturday morning, start with coffee at Café Vino Tinto on Main Street. Grab your caffeine fix and then head to Paradise Restaurant for a classic breakfast before a full day of exploring. Both put you right in downtown Safety Harbor, so you’re already in the middle of everything.
Explore Safety Harbor by Golf Cart
After breakfast, ditch the car for the day and rent a golf cart from Harbor Rides or Happy Carts. Safety Harbor is compact and easy to explore, and cruising around by golf cart just makes the entire day feel a little more like vacation.
Use it to explore downtown, check out the neighborhoods and make your way to some of Safety Harbor’s more unusual attractions.

Saturday Afternoon: Get Weird at WhimzeyLand
Next up: art—but definitely not the quiet museum kind.
Visit the Safety Harbor Art & Music Center (SHAMc) and then make your way over to Whimzeyland.
SHAMc is easy to recognize thanks to its wildly colorful exterior and giant pink elephant. Then there’s WhimzeyLand, also known as the Bowling Ball House, where hundreds of painted bowling balls, mosaics, bottle trees, sculptures and colorful installations transform an ordinary home into a giant piece of art. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds and take photos.
Bring your camera because this is easily one of the most Instagram-worthy stops in Safety Harbor.
Saturday Lunch: Pick Your Favorite
Head back downtown for lunch, because Safety Harbor has way too many good locally owned restaurants to choose from.
For seafood and steaks, try Water Oak. If pizza is calling your name, head to The NONA Slice House. And if you’re asking me where I’m going? It’s The Tides Market. Seafood wins for me every time.
One of the things I love about Safety Harbor is that you can easily make eating your way down Main Street part of the itinerary.

Saturday Night: Brewery Hop
Once you’ve recovered from lunch and spent some more time wandering the shops, it’s time for drinks.
Start at Troubled Waters Brewing right on Main Street, then head over to Crooked Thumb Brewery. Crooked Thumb has a laid-back taproom and outdoor beer-garden atmosphere that makes it an easy place to hang out for the evening.
And because no vacation day should end without dessert, make your final stop Bassano Cheesecake.
Grab a slice of cheesecake and a coffee and consider Saturday officially complete.
Sunday: Yoga + The Waterfront
Sunday morning calls for something a little slower.
Drop into a yoga class at OM or Blend to stretch out after Saturday’s adventures and start your last day feeling refreshed.
After yoga, head toward the waterfront and take a walk along the Safety Harbor Pier and Marina. Keep your eyes on the water you may even spot some Florida wildlife. Manatees are frequently seen around the marina, making this one of those places where it’s worth slowing down and watching the water for a while.
One Last Stop: Philippe Park
Before heading home, make one final stop at Philippe Park.
The waterfront park is known for its massive oak trees covered in Spanish moss, beautiful Tampa Bay views and its historic Tocobaga temple mound. It’s one of those places that feels like Old Florida, and it’s the perfect backdrop for a few last photos from your weekend.
Walk beneath the oaks, find a spot along the water and soak up a little more of Safety Harbor before it’s time to leave.

Small Town, Perfect Weekend
Safety Harbor is proof that you don’t have to travel far or pack your itinerary with huge attractions to have an amazing Florida weekend. Sometimes all you need is a walkable downtown, great local food, a few craft beers, some seriously quirky art, waterfront views and enough time to wander without rushing anywhere.
Come during Third Friday and you get to experience this little town at its liveliest, but make sure you leave enough time to explore beyond Main Street too. Grab the coffee, rent the golf cart, eat the seafood, take the ridiculous pictures at WhimzeyLand, watch for manatees and finish your weekend underneath the oak trees at Philippe Park.
You might come to Safety Harbor for a weekend but don’t be surprised when you start planning your next one before you even leave.
